12,714 Flags to Honor Naples’ Heroes

November 17, 2011 by Costa DeVault

Last week, we helped the Camaraderie Foundation place 10,678 American flags in the ground at Loch Haven Park in Orlando. Today, we had the honor of volunteering with them again at Cambier Park in Naples, Fla. This time, there were 12,714 flags – each representing a local soldier who has served post-9/11.

The Artisan Label

November 15, 2011 by Nina

A recent USA Today article examined the use — or perhaps more accurately, overuse — of the word “artisan” in marketing campaigns. More than 800 companies are following this trend. Tostitos has an Artisan Recipes tortilla chips line; Starbucks sells Artisan Breakfast Sandwiches; and Wendy’s serves an Artisan Egg Sandwich.

When exposed to “artisan” ads, I never thought twice about the word or what it actually meant. Merriam-Webster defines it as “one that produces something in limited quantities often using traditional methods” — which, to me, doesn’t exactly fit a chain restaurant like Wendy’s.

So what is it about this certain label that appeals to consumers? As most marketers know, it’s all about perception. To many, a product touted as artisan is perceived to be more gourmet, fresh, homegrown and/or exclusive — resulting in a higher cost.

Domino’s used an opposite approach with its recent “We’re Not Artisans” campaign by poking fun at the snobbery associated with the term and emphasizing their low prices.

With so many “artisan” products clogging the market, does the label still retain its original meaning by describing a gourmet product — or should marketers be called out on this food foul?

We Wish You a Mobile New Year: Win a Free Mobile Website for the Local Nonprofit of Your Choice

November 14, 2011 by Costa DeVault

Since 1985, Costa DeVault has donated tens of thousands of hours to nonprofits in our community. From pro-bono and matching grants for PR and graphic design … to delivering Meals on Wheels to seniors since 2001 … to adopting a family each holiday season through the Boys and Girls Club of Central Florida, giving back has always been integral to our company culture. It still is. But, this year, it’s taking on a different look.

As technology evolves, we thought it only fitting that our giving should do the same. That’s why, this year, we’re going to donate a free mobile website to one Central Florida nonprofit – and you get to help us choose.

It’s easy to qualify. Just guess how many total column inches of publicity (print and online) Costa DeVault garnered for clients in 2011. Guesses must be posted on Costa DeVault’s Facebook page wall at http://www.facebook.com/CostaDeVault. (In order to post, you will need to “like” the page first.)

You can make your guess between now (November 14, 2011) and midnight on December 31, 2011. The person closest to the actual number will be contacted on Tuesday, January 3, 2012 and asked to decide which local nonprofit will receive the mobile site. The winner will be announced on Facebook on Wednesday, January 4, 2012.

Good luck – and happy guessing!

Writing for the (Social Media) Medium – Part II

October 20, 2011 by Jenni

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of guest presenting at Jennifer Wakefield’s PUR3100 class at UCF. Using my most recent blog post (Writing for the (Social Media) Medium) as a guide, I discussed traditional writing fundamentals and how they often overlap with the nontraditional. We also talked about our favorite brands that use social media (for me, Southwest Air and DKNY) and tried our hand at making an Ocean Spray Facebook update a tweet and a McDonald’s advertisement a short, compelling post.

Thank you to Jen for hosting me – and to her students for the thoughtful questions and discussion. Here’s a link to the presentation:
